2K Hires Apex Legends Lead to Boost Challenged Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Comes After Mixed Feedback
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer direction.
The president stated that the developers is now reimagining the project with a revised focus, aiming to address player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
The news mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the entire content from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to mind and overhauled the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our audience.
The trust in this project strengthens every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the latest Director of the team. After a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.
His leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having dedicated the recent years developing and leading some of the most popular series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in receiving him in the coming days. We are all excited to keep seeing the evolution of the game in the months to come.
The President
Experience of the New Head
Brinkman presently holds the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 alongside a public demo. At the time, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Take on the opponents with unique powers, stakes, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."
The game does not have an announced debut schedule or supported systems, but players can look forward to additional details as production progresses.
